Empowering Parents To Raise Healthy Advocates

Parenting is a challenging responsibility, especially when it comes to raising children who are passionate about their health and the well-being of others. As a mom of twins who watch me advocate daily, I've realized that the key lies in cultivating a sense of advocacy.

Basically, I believe one of the best ways that parents can empower their children to also be advocates without being overbearing, is to help them normalize advocacy. Paving the way for children to become conscientious health advocates in their own right begins while they are young. At the foundation of it all is to get your children to find what they love and go for it.

Encouraging children to embrace a healthy lifestyle and become advocates for wellness is a journey, but it is important for parents to strike a balance between providing guidance and allowing independence. Frankly, I believe navigating this fine line, parents can empower their children to grow into voices of change and exhibit an unwavering commitment to personal and collective well-being. My daughters are in their teenage years, and I've been watching them find what they love about advocacy and support it in their own way.

1. Lead by example

Parents serve as the primary role models for their children. To raise health advocates, parents must embody the behaviors they hope to instill. Prioritizing healthy choices in daily life, such as maintaining a balanced diet, exercising regularly, and managing stress, sets a powerful example for their children to follow.

2. Encourage exploration and education

Fostering curiosity is key to nurturing health advocates in children. Encourage them to explore various facets of health – physical, mental, and emotional – through books, documentaries, and discussions. Whether it is achieving personal fitness goals, initiating a school health campaign, or simply making positive lifestyle changes, acknowledging and celebrating these accomplishments reinforces the importance of individual efforts in promoting health advocacy. It helps instill a sense of pride and encourages children to continue striving for positive change.

As parents, it is natural to want the best for our children. By embracing a parenting style that combines guidance with autonomy, we can empower our children to become health advocates while respecting their individuality. Striking this balance not only benefits our children, but it also ensures the growth of a healthier and more conscious society, one budding advocate at a time.
