Conference Season Tips

I just registered for my first conference since beginning my advocacy efforts. I had a few volunteer speaking engagements. My first paid engagement is later this month. Any tips, advice, or best practices at conferences that could lead to paid work?

  1. I'm sure you'll do a wonderful job, and adding to the great comments:

    * Research Attendees and Speakers: Identify "must-meet" individuals via the attendee list, app, or LinkedIn
    * Never Eat Alone: Use meals, coffee breaks, and hotel bars to meet people. These informal times are often better for building rapport than the official networking sessions.
    * Use Social Media: Live-tweet or post insights on LinkedIn using the conference hashtag to increase visibility and attract potential clients to you.
    * After the Conference Follow-up - Provide Value First: Instead of asking for work immediately, share a relevant article, introduce them to someone in your network, or send a resource you promised.

Recent NRG Oncology Conference attended in January - a great opportunity to share on LinkedIn that shows your involvement and expertise.

  2. Congratulations on your 1st conference. There are always times when you can network. Make sure that you visit all of the tables and speak to people. Write down names, and get in touch after the conference with the people you met. Ask about their products and have your elevator pitch ready for when asked about yourself.

    1. this is gold! Thanks

  3. Do a great job and network. You will get invitations.
