When I saw my Urologist who told me I had prostate cancer, he asked me a question which I misinterpreted as a joke.
He asked:
“How would you like to treat your prostate cancer?”
I’ve had more than a dozen surgeries and in all of those situations I was told the treatment/surgery I needed.
No Doctor ever asked me for my opinion!
So here I was with a potentially life threatening illness I knew absolutely nothing about, and my Urologist was asking me to decide my treatment!
I told him I’d get back with him and proceed to buy books, and check out books from my library. After reading through a dozen books I was no closer to making a decision.
So I made another appointment and asked him:
“If you were given my biopsy results what would you do?”
He said:
“I’d choose surgery.”
I replied:
“That’s my decision too”
I was referred to UCSF and had surgery there.
NO ONE adequately prepared us for the permanent changes that occur after prostate surgery.
We were so mad my wife and I wrote an award winning book to prepare men and couples to live and love without a prostate.
